5 Best DIY Hair Masks for Your Ultimate Lockdown Glow Up

Social distancing is such a style killer, we know that. When was the last time you put on a pair of skinny jeans? When was the last time you finished your entire skincare routine? When was the last time you showed your hair some real love instead of putting it in a sleazy ponytail, again? Give up or glow-up? We think you know the answer. We are here on your fairy godmother duty, with 5 DIY hair mask recipes in our back pocket! These hair masks are easy to make during lockdown, and you will see instant results.


Before we dive into the fun part, let’s take a look at the hair health ABCs.

Your hair needs just as much love as your face. But here is the good news, you don’t need to load a 10-step routine on it every night.

Regular wash (cleanse), good conditioner (maintain), and a hair mask (deep treatment) once or twice a week is enough to give your hair that luscious feel. Did you know that a good hair mask can come from your humble pantry? Your hair probably loves the household staples more than you do!


Ingredients Your Hair Love:

Ingredients your hair will love: avocado, olive oil, egg, lemon, mayonnaise, banana, honey, coconut oil

  1. Avocado - full of fatty acids and natural oils, especially beneficial for dry hair. Besides, the leftover offers a great smear on toast.
  1. Olive Oil - provides lots of good fats and cholesterol, rich in Vitamin E. Olive oil promotes hair growth while moisturizing the locks greatly. Also known as the Mediterraneans’ secret weapon to conquer the world.
  1. Egg - egg whites are high in vitamin B and protein which help with hair growth and renewal. Besides protein and vitamins, egg yolk contains sulfur, a key component of human hair.
  1. Lemon - a universally acclaimed vitamin C provider. Lemon juice creates a shiny appeal and reduces oil and dandruff production. It can also bleach your hair so make sure you follow the recipe to a tee!
  1. Mayonnaise??!! - egg yolks and vinegar are the major components of mayonnaise. Egg yolks provide all the collagen, protein, vitamins, and fatty acids while vinegar balances the PH level of your scalp.
  1. Banana - a potassium, magnesium, and amino acids powerhouse. Bananas help to promote hair growth, moisturize dehydrated hair, and control dandruff.
  1. Honey - sweet and medicinal at the same time, honey is rich in vitamins, minerals, and other antioxidants. Apart from being a great conditioner, the protein and glucose content in honey also gives your hair that healthy shine. Sweetener for your hair, amiright?
  1. Coconut Oil- a massively popular hair and beauty supplement. It is clinically proven to be effective against hair loss, hair breakage, and dehydration thanks to the presence of healthy acids. A superstar in the beauty community, you probably don’t need further introduction.




#1: For dry/damaged hair

Hair mask for dry/damaged hair: olive oil, egg yolk, mayonnaise


  • 2 Tblsp of olive oil
  • 1 Large egg yolk
  • 1 Tbsp of mayonnaise


This DIY hair mask is our go-to recipe. Adjust the recipe accordingly if you have longer hair. Slather the mask over towel-dried, damp hair then put on a shower cap. Leave it in for half an hour then wash out with lukewarm water to not scramble the egg! We recommend trying this mask once a week for the best results.


#2: For Oily Hair

Hair mask for oily hair: egg white, lemon


  • 1 Egg white
  • 1 Lemon


Here is another GlamTouche team favorite! Mix one egg white and the juice of one lemon until it takes on a creamy consistency. Slather it over damp hair, especially the roots. Tie the hair up in a bun or wear a shower cap for at least 20 minutes. Then rinse out with lukewarm water - again, be aware of the egg!


#3: For Dandruff (Courtesy of JaaackJack)


Hair mask for dandruff: banana, honey, coconut oil, lemon

  • 1 Ripe banana
  • 1 Tbsp of honey
  • 1 Tbsp of coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp of lemon juice


Mix it well with a fork. Apply the mixture to your damp hair and massage it into your scalp. Leave it in for 30 minutes then rinse it off, shampoo and condition as you wish. Do it once a week and bid goodbye to dandruff!


#4: For Healthy Curls(Courtesy of Bianca Renee)

Hair mask for healthy curls: avocado, banana, olive oil, coconut oil, honey


  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1/2 Banana
  • 1 Tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp of coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp of honey


Mix up the ingredients or even blend it into a paste. Smear it all over your dry hair including your scalp. Wear a shower cap over your hair for at least one hour. Rinse it off with shampoo and conditioner. Do it once or twice a monthand say hello to those bouncy curls!


#5: For Frizzy Hair(Courtesy of Twistmepretty)

Hair mask for frizzy hair: coconut oil, egg, avocado, honey


  • 2 Tbsp of coconut oil
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1/4 cup of honey


Start by melting the coconut oil (a few seconds in the microwave should do the trick). Add the egg and mix them together. Then add the avocado. Either blend it into a paste or mix it by hand (don't worry if it's clumpy). Massage the concoction through your hair then wrap it up in a shower cap. Leave it for as long as you can then rinse out with lukewarm water - hot water will scramble the egg!
