Watch Your Tone! The Ultimate Guide to Your Perfect Hair Color

How to use your undertones to find the best hair color for you

Girl, let’s face it, your hair has known better times. Whether you have colored hair (are your roots halfway down your head already?) or you’re rocking your natural hair color, it’s only understandable that after all this craziness ends, we are all hoping to get a fresh new look for a fresh new world.

But before going crazy and going from blonde to jet black using your standard box dye (please don’t!), let’s take a moment to actually figure out what hair color would suit you best!

One of the easiest and best methods is by looking at your skin tone, well your undertones to be exact!

What are undertones you ask? They are the color underneath your skin, which affects your overall hue. Finding out what undertones you have can be crucial in finding the right makeup shades, as well as what clothes and hair colors look best on you.

Cool, now how can I find my undertones?

There are a few different ways to figure out what your undertones are. One of them is by looking at the veins on your wrist.

The colors of your veins can help with finding out your undertones

If the veins look green or olive, you have warm undertones. If they look blueish or even purple, you have cool undertones. If you can hardly tell if they are green or blue, then chances are you are a lucky neutral.

If you're not sure you have found your undertone with our quick test, don't worry! We put together a handy little quiz you can take by clicking on the link below 😉.

Quiz: What is your skin's undertone?

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s dive into what hair colors are perfect for your complexion!

Keep Cool and Carry On!

Celebrities with cool undertones
l/r Megan Fox, Lupita Nyong'o, Lucy Liu, Amanda Seyfried

Individuals with cool undertones usually have pink, red, or blueish undertones in their skin and look best in silver jewelry! They also burn fast in the sun instead of tanning. The best lipstick would be plums, cherry, purples, and anything with a blue or purple undertone.

Colors to do!

  • Dark browns or jet black
  • Ashy blonde
  • Violet, red or any strong, vibrant colors
  • White or platinum hair

Fun fact:

Having cool undertones doesn't automatically mean that one has lighter skin. Actress Lupita Nyong’o is a perfect example of someone with a darker skin color having cool undertones.

Gold is the Warmest Color!

Celebrities with warm undertones,
l/r Freida Pinto, Beyoncé Knowles, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez

If you are an individual with warm undertones you usually have more yellow and peach undertones and look amazing in gold jewelry. You also tan quite easily, as opposed to cool undertones. The best lipsticks for your undertone would be nude, rosy pinks, and matted reds.

Colors to do!

  • Golden copper
  • Honey brown
  • Dark brunette or jet black
  • Soft blonde
  • Strawberry Blond
  • A rich beige

Neutral Zone!

Celebrities with neutral undertones
l/r Natalie Portman, Selena Gomez, Kerry Washington, Jennifer Aniston

Now, if you have a more neutral undertone, you're in luck! You have quite the flexibility when it comes to hair colors! You also look great in both silver and gold jewelry. You can still tan, but quite slower than your warm-undertone sisters. The same applies to lipsticks: you have a wider range of options from pinks to neutrals.

Colors to do!

  • Rich golden brown
  • Dark jet black
  • Honey Blond
  • Fire red
  • Or just any color really, pretty much anything suits you!

 There you go!

What hair color(s) do you want to try out? Let us know in the comments! If you don’t want to wait until you can get an appointment with your favorite hairdresser, or don’t want to shell out big bucks on your hair transformation, here are a few tips for dying your hair at home.

  • If you can, call a friend (preferably someone who has experience in dying hair), it will be much easier if someone can help you.
  • Avoid any drastic change, and if you go lighter, don’t go more than 1 shade lighter.
  • Don’t use box dye! Seriously, don’t. If you mess up your hair color, your hairdresser will have so much more trouble fixing your hair if you used box dye!
  • Watch a few tutorials and read up on how to correctly use bleach, hair dye, and toner. Don’t just wing it!
  • If you’re unsure, opt for semi-permanent hair color. It’s less damaging to your hair and will wash out after a while if you don’t like the color.
